Fighting Finn: A Mother Shares Her Son's Story of Miraculous Life

Written by Kelly Blumenthal, Finn's mother

Finn was born on January 2, 2015, with a rare combination of heart defects. He spent the first 8 months of his life at UVA Children's Hospital in Charlottesville, Va enduring 10 surgeries including one open heart surgery.

Since the beginning, Finn's journey has not come without challenges. He continues to be hospitalized about every 8-12 weeks and has had two additional procedures since being discharged with a few more planned in the future. His next open heart surgery will be in the next 12 months.

Finn's life has completely changed our lives as a family and as individuals. He has taught us to not take any moment for granted, give back to others and and to spread as much awareness of CHD and organ donation as possible. There is always a chance that Finn may need to be listed for transplant as his condition is very complicated and could change at any minute.

If I had to describe life with Finn in one word it would be breathtaking. He takes my breathe away with his love, simplicity, smile, determination, and bravery. It is an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to witness the miracle of his life every single day.

Finn has beaten the odds from the very beginning. We were diagnosed at 19 weeks gestation and many doctors and hospitals said that Finn would not survive. Not only did he survive but he defied the odds by taking his first steps, beginning to eat on his own, and having incredible comprehension skills. We definitely owe his success to many but special thanks to UVA Children's Hospital and the many, many prayers that surround this little boy and our family. I may have given birth to Finn but the many individuals that cheer him on and root for him each day are the ones who are actually giving him life. We couldn't be more grateful.
